Dr. Michael Thaut: “From Confession to Profession: The Evolution of Neurologic Music Therapy”
On May 15, 2013 Dr. Michael Thaut, Professor of Music and Neuroscience at Colorado State University, presented a talk entitled: “From Confession to Profession: The Evolution of Neurologic Music Therapy.” The talk presented historic background for music therapy, the development of Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT), and provided specific research illustration through research data and video examples of some of the strategies of NMT. This talk was presented through the cooperation of the Music and Health Research Collaboratory (MaHRC), University of Toronto, and the Ontario Medical Association District 11. The talk was funded by the Connaught Research Fund of the University of Toronto.

This event was supported by the Connaught Fund at the University of Toronto and was part of the development of an agenda of research on music medicine. On Friday May 31, a full-day workshop was held at the Faculty of Music in conjunction with the American Synesthesia Association Conference. Focal Dystonia and MaHRC Associate Dr. Joaquin Farias featured in Globe and Mail
On March 7, The Globe and Mail published an article entitled, “Using the Brain to Retrain the Body to Overcome Dystonia.” It recounts the story of Federico Bitti who suffers from dystonia, a disease that affects a person’s ability to control their muscles. He is trying a new therapy involving neuroplasticity, and specific exercises to retrain the brain. The video showing Dr. Farias giving therapy to Federico went viral with over a million hits within a week.
